Program Description
A trip to Montserrat combines mountain scenery, centuries of history and one of Catalonia’s most important pilgrimage sites. You will leave central Barcelona by air-conditioned coach and, after reaching the foot of the mountain, continue upwards by cog-wheel train, enjoying views of the unusual rock formations along the way.
The name Montserrat means “serrated mountain” and refers to the jagged peaks that give the massif its distinctive appearance. Once there, your guide will tell you more about the history and architecture of Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey and share the legend connected with the apparition of the Madonna and Child in the Santa Cova cave.
One of the main highlights of the trip is a visit to the Basilica, home to La Moreneta - the Black Madonna. The wooden statue is believed to date back to the 12th century and has remained one of the most important symbols of Montserrat for centuries.
Beyond the main monastery complex, the area is also home to smaller chapels and walking trails. During your free time, you can take a walk around the surroundings, relax in the mountain setting or simply enjoy the views over the Catalan landscape.
